North Carolina Police Cite Thousands Of Drivers During Campaign

Last week we reported that North Carolina Police were stepping up DWI enforcement for the whole week of St. Patrick's Day. During the "Booze It and Lose It" campaign police all across the state were on high alert for drunk driving, drugged driving, and every other kind of bad driving they could find.

The campaign ran from March 11 - 17, and in that time North Carolina Police issued 1,013 DWI citations statewide. They also issued thousands of citations for other offenses including speeding, drug possession, seat belt violations and child passenger safety violations.

Police achieved their goal by conducting 2,628 sobriety patrols and checkpoints. Mecklenburg, Wake, and Buncombe Counties topped the list with the highest number of DWI citations. Closer to home, here are the numbers for New Hanover and Sampson.

New Hanover County:

• 13 total DWI citations

• 3 drug violations

• 35 speeding tickets

• 255 total traffic and criminal violations

Sampson County:

• 4 total DWI citations

• 1 drug violation

• 82 speeding tickets

• 290 total traffic and criminal violations

The State Transportation Secretary called the campaign a complete success. He estimated that "countless" lives were saved because of the efforts of North Carolina Police to get drunk drivers off the roads.

With so much police presence during the campaign it is possible that some of these citations can be called into question. It is easy for police to make careless mistakes and become overly ambitious during a busy and high-profile campaign like this one. In light of this, it is important for any driver facing charges to understand his rights and his legal options.
