Bus driver faces reckless driving charges

It turns out that the driver of a Sky Express bus headed from North Carolina to New York City, Kin Yiu Cheung, had several prior traffic violations. Unfortunately, the police indicate that he might have been sleepy, and speed may also have been a factor, in the recent accident in which he crashed the bus. The bus accident caused the death of four passengers and injured 50 others.

The bus roll-over, which occurred one week ago on Tuesday, has led to charges of reckless driving against Cheung, who, as Reed Williams reports for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, has "four speeding tickets and several other violations."

Williams lists the infractions:

  • Failure to yield entering a highway
  • Failure to obey a highway sign
  • Following too closely
  • Seat-belt violations

The bus company, Sky Express, is headquartered in North Carolina, and was ordered shut down by the feds after the accident.

Bus drivers like Cheung - as well as truck drivers - face the loss of their commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) in cases like these. Obviously, the loss of a commercial driver's license means the loss of a driver's livelihood.

Whether or not Cheung faces the consequence of suspension or complete loss of his driver's license will remain to be seen. As Williams reports, Cheung was due in court late last week for the initial hearing regarding the reckless driving charges.
