Writers for the Winston-Salem Journal report that the Winston-Salem area was recently ranked as one of the most desirable places to live in the nation. But, on the other hand, Forsyth County has some of the most DWI arrests in North Carolina.
In fact, North Carolina as a state stacked up against other states gets a grade of D in terms of the number of arrests for drunk driving. As the Winston-Salem Journal reports, there are 81 DWI arrests for every 100,000 people.
The Highway Safety Program provided a grant to fund a DWI prosecutor. "The hope is that we will continue to aggressively prosecute drunk drivers, which in turn will make our communities safer," says the D.A.
But the Winston-Salem Journal questions whether a prosecutor who focuses on DWI cases is enough to curb the trend. "We must still find ways to deal with the core issue - drinking and driving are ingrained social behaviors."
