North Carolina mom charged with assault, battery for school fight

Most parents would do anything to protect their children. There's an instinct that kicks in when a parent perceives that a child is being bullied, hurt or threatened in some way. But when it comes to intervening, it's possible to take things too far.

An incident at a school in New Hanover County, North Carolina, resulted in misdemeanor charges for a mother who went to pick up her 16-year-old daughter one day earlier this month. According to the Sheriff's Office, the woman and her daughter went to a classroom to collect the girl's assignments. When they got there, the daughter got into a fight with another girl.

Deputies said the mother got between the two, pushed the other girl down and got on top of her. Another girl tried to pull the mother off the girl, but the mother hit the second girl before turning her attention back to the girl on the floor until they were separated, authorities said.

The mother, daughter and the other girl in the fight were all charged with affray -- fighting in a public place. Sheriff's officials believe there was already tension between the two girls before the fight. After the district attorney's office reviewed the case and watched a video of the incident, the mother was also charged with assault and battery, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and disorderly conduct. She was released from jail on a $1,000 bond.

There are very few circumstances that warrant a physical fight between an adult and a teenager; this mother was likely acting on instinct to protect her daughter instead of thinking through the problem. We don't know what might have happened between the girls in the past, but in a court of law, it doesn't matter. Although the mother's charges are misdemeanors, a conviction can carry serious consequences. Contacting an attorney with experience in defending assault charges would be a good way for her to regain control of a situation that simply got out of hand.
