Marijuana possession charges for North Carolina student

Students who face charges of marijuana possession owe it to themselves to try and resolve the unfortunate situation quickly and effectively. At stake may be a person's record, college scholarships and future opportunities. There may be ways for a young person to challenge the charges or try to have the damage of a conviction minimized.

A young student at North Carolina Central University was recently charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and maintaining a dwelling for drug distribution. The young man's roommate was also included on the charges.

According to reports, the student's apartment was searched by authorities. They allegedly found 84 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, as well as over $12,000 in cash.

Before people assume that the student is guilty, it is important to raise a few questions. First, details of the search are not given. Therefore, the circumstances under which a search was warranted may be questioned.

Since the student and his roommate share the residence, it is possible that only one of them was aware of or involved in any drug activity. The other roommate may have no connection whatsoever and should therefore not face charges. There was also no mention of this being a repeat offense or habitual practice for either of the young men.

Depending on these and other details, it may not be appropriate for the student or his roommate to face serious penalties. However, the fact is that punishment for even simple drug possession charges varies widely. There is a possibility of jail time or fines and in this case, the student's position on the school basketball team may be in jeopardy. Without immediate and effective attention, these charges could turn into convictions that permanently affect each man's life.
