North Carolina Drunk Driving Crackdown Results in 2,745 DWI Citations

Last week, North Carolina officials announced that their recent 18-day crusade to curb drunk driving resulted in more than 2,700 drivers being arrested for driving while impaired.

The campaign - known as "Booze It & Lose It" - consisted of more than 7,800 drunk driving checkpoints and ran from August 17 to September 3. In all, the effort resulted in 2,745 driving while impaired citations and 94,125 citations for other criminal and traffic violations.

Residents of Raleigh will be interested to know that Wake County had the largest number of DWI citations issued during the drunk driving campaign -a total of 209. Following Wake County was 182 drunk driving citations issued in Mecklenburg County and 106 in Guilford County.

Besides DWI citations, police officers issued citations for 1,172 child safety violations, 24,553 speeding violations, 6,691 safety belt violations and 2,718 drug violations.

Ultimately, the goal of the campaign was to make North Carolina roads safer. In fact, North Carolina Secretary of Transportation Gene Conti expressed in a statement, "These numbers show that law enforcement officers across the state worked diligently to make North Carolina's roads safer during this campaign."

Hopefully the "Booze It & Lose It" campaign will have lasting effects on the safety of North Carolina roads.
