Coast Guard stresses boating safety after several drown

With warm weather still engulfing North Carolina, many continue to take their boats to the water. Though this can be a fun and relaxing getaway, it can also be dangerous. In fact, the Coast Guard is stressing boat safety as 40 individuals have drowned so far this summer from New Jersey to North Carolina's southern border.

Amongst the safety tips the Coast Guard has emphasized are wearing a lifejacket, obtaining a vessel safety check, being cognizant of the weather, and developing a float plan. However, one of the most important is for boaters to take a safety course. Seventy percent of all boat accidents are caused by operator error. Therefore, by taking a safety course, an individual may be able to prevent him or herself from acting in a way that puts others in danger.

However, even those who take a boating safety course can act negligently on the water. When a reckless boat driver causes an injurious or even fatal accident, victims and their families can be left devastated. When this happens, those who have been injured, or who have lost a loved one, should consider taking legal action.

By filing a lawsuit, a victim or his or her family can attempt to recover much needed compensation while seeking to hold a negligent boater accountable. If the defendant's negligence can be shown to have caused the victim's serious injuries or death, then compensation may be awarded for medical expenses, funeral costs, lost wages, and/or pain and suffering. Such a lawsuit can also financially devastate a reckless boater, forcing him or her to think twice before acting negligently again. In turn, this may prevent others from partaking in risky behaviors on the water, which will help keep everyone safer.
