Drunk driver causes fatal moped accident

Even with winter in full swing, many North Carolinians are taking to the streets on their motorcycles, mopeds, and scooters. While these modes of transportation can certainly be cost-effective and even fun, their lack of safety features also makes them dangerous, particularly when other motorists do not pay attention or follow the rules of the road. Even worse, some of those inattentive drivers out there are intoxicated.

Sadly, one of these inattentive drivers recently caused a fatal accident. According to police, the 46-year-old man's Infiniti rear-ended a moped, throwing both the moped driver and his passenger from the vehicle. The passenger, a 22-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 19-year-old driver of the moped was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Infiniti failed to stop after the accident, and drove to a nearby business where he left his car and fled on foot. Police were able to catch him and he now faces several criminal charges, including driving while impaired and felony death by vehicle.

Sadly, the family of the deceased victim in this case may have a long road ahead of itself. The emotional toll taken by such a sad and sudden loss can affect a surviving family for years or even decades. Some are unable to ever get over the loss. In addition, a surviving family may incur medical expenses and funeral costs, in addition to lost wages. This financial damage can leave a family in a tight spot, not knowing where to turn in a time of grief, anger and frustration.

One person to whom these individuals can turn is a wrongful death attorney. A compassionate attorney knows what these families are going through and will do everything in his or her power to ensure the matter is handled appropriately. By filing a lawsuit against the individual who caused the accident, a family may be able to recover much needed compensation while at the same time finding a sense of closure and justice.
