Responding to Gov. McCroy's Workers' Comp Statistic

Attorney Frank Bailey discusses Governor Pat McCrory's recent State of the State Address.

In his recent State of the State address Gov. Pat McCrory again took aim at North Carolina workers' compensation. With a straight face the governor claimed 40 percent of state expenditures on workers' compensation are related to fraud and abuse. However, when confronted about the ridiculousness of such a number the governor could not reference any statistical data for his absurd assertion.

We who practice this area of law realize that while some amount of abuse is unavoidable, the overwhelming majority of individuals on workers' compensation just want to get better so that they can get back to work. It is obvious that McCrory's baseless accusation is a bid to legitimize future attempts to narrow the rights of injured workers. Now more than ever it is vitally important for anyone who has been hurt on the job to retain competent counsel that can navigate this mine field of bureaucratic pit falls placed with the sole purpose unjustly denying them the opportunity to heal and get back to earning a decent wage.
