Procter & Gamble pet food recall expanded again

Even more of a line of pet food products manufactured by a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble Co. is now being recalled over salmonella fears. Dog and cat owners in Wilmington may have heard about the recall of Natura Pet Products pet foods. Readers may also be justified in wondering when P&G is going to get the salmonella problems under control.

The company announced the original recall of these defective products this spring. At that time, the recall included certain brands of dry food manufactured by Natura after it was discovered that a bag of food had become contaminated with salmonella. Since then, the recall has been expanded to include more products three times and now includes all pet foods made by Natura prior to June 10.

A statement on Natura’s website attempts to address customers’ concerns about the potential scope of the problem. In the statement, the company says the most recent expansion will make sure that all of its products currently for sale were subject to “additional finished product testing procedures” that went into effect on June 10.

The products subject to the recall include Innova, California Natural, EVO, Mother Nature and Karma pet foods. No pets or humans have been sickened by the foods, P&G says.

A series of issues in the company’s pet products division, including these recalls, led to a recent change in leadership. The executive in charge of pet care left “to pursue other interests” on June 5.

It can be scary to imagine making your pet sick by feeding it tainted food. Hopefully, the recall will keep that from happening.
