How the Government Shutdown Affects Social Security Disability

There’s a lot of confusion about how those on, or in need of, Social Security Disability are affected by the government shutdown. We’ve put together this page to hopefully answer any questions you have. If you still have questions, please contact our office.

Will I still continue to receive my Social Security or SSI payments?

Yes. According to the Social Security Administration, payments will continue with no change in payment dates.

What happens if I need to apply for disability benefits during the shutdown?

Social Security field offices are still able to help you file your application, but your application may not be processed until the shutdown has ended.

What happens to disability hearings?

If you already have a hearing date scheduled, your hearing will still take place on the date you were given. Unfortunately, until the shutdown is over, Social Security is not scheduling new hearings.

Will claims still be approved during the shutdown?

According to the Social Security Administration’s 2013 contingency plan, decision-writing will be discontinued during the shutdown. So while your case may go before a judge during your hearing, it’s most likely a decision will not be issued for the time being.

Despite the ongoing government shutdown, don’t let it stop you from contacting a disability attorney with your questions. Our attorneys are happy to answer any additional questions you have. Give us a call at 910-421-2459.
